In June 2025, southern England experienced an intensely unusual heatwave, with temperatures reaching 32 °C (89.6 °F) and even 33.2 °C recorded near Gatwick Airport. Such heat was incredibly rare in the pre-industrial era—perhaps a “1-in-2,500-year” event—but climate scientists now say that this level of extreme heat has become 100 times more likely due to human-driven warming. It’s also 2–4 °C warmer than past heatwaves of similar timing, making the heat both more intense and more deadly.

Health Impacts Are Severe

Over a single weekend, England and Wales faced nearly 600 excess deaths, primarily among people over 65. Hospitals reported surges in emergency cases—dehydration, heat strokes, cardiovascular stress. National health services issued amber heat alerts, urging vulnerable individuals to stay hydrated, avoid peak sun hours, and seek cooler spaces.

Infrastructure and Environment Under Strain

The extreme heat led to significant disruptions:

  • Rail services imposed speed restrictions to prevent track deformation. One Thameslink train even stalled between stations, stranding about 1,500 passengers in sweltering temperatures above 33 °C.
  • Fire services responded to over 560 wildfires in England—an increase of more than 700% compared to last year—prompting warnings against barbecues, discarded cigarettes, and glass near dry grass.
  • The driest spring in over a century worsened wildfire risk and stressed water supplies across southern and central England.

Climate Signal and Future Warning

According to the national weather agency, there’s now a nearly 50% chance that the UK will reach 40 °C in the next 12 years. Days above 40 °C are already 20 times more likely than in the 1960s. Without urgent cuts to carbon emissions, scientists warn summers like this could soon be the new normal.

Why This Matters

England’s 2025 heatwave is more than a temporary weather anomaly—it’s a clear sign of accelerating climate impacts. It resulted in deaths, overwhelmed hospitals, disrupted transport, threatened energy and water systems, and exposed deep vulnerabilities in public health and infrastructure.
